Connwood Foresters, Inc. (CFI) founded in 1945, is the oldest forestry consulting firm in Connecticut. We have provided professional forestry consulting in CT, MA, NY, RI, and NJ to landowners for over 75 years. We are a forest owner’s cooperative proud to represent forest landowners’ best interests. We service over 4,000 acres of forest each year for private landowners, municipalities, non-profits, land trusts, corporations, clubs, and water companies. We emphasize data-driven management, ecological integrity, and long-term forest resilience. We also operate a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm at our office in Rockfall, Connecticut.
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated field-oriented Forester to join our growing team. This position offers a rare opportunity to work across a wide spectrum of forestry disciplines including timber management, urban forestry, municipal parks, invasive species control, habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The ideal candidate is excited to spend significant time in the field, enjoys technical analysis and report writing, and is passionate about climate-smart forestry and public-facing land management.
Essential Functions:
Conduct forest inventories using fixed-area and variable-radius plot methods
Analyze forest data including TPA, basal area, QMD, volume, stocking, and species composition
Assist with timber sale layout, tree marking, volume estimation, and harvest administration
Assist in preparation of proposals, management plans, and harvest plans to achieve a wide variety of economic, recreation, and conservation objectives.
Perform invasive species surveys and assist with mechanical and/or chemical control projects
Collect and manage GIS field data; assist with map creation and spatial reporting
Prepare high-quality written deliverables for municipalities, land trusts, and private landowners
Attend site walks, public meetings, and stakeholder engagements as needed
Mark/refurbish boundary lines.
Cut brush with clearing saw on embankments and in woodland sites.
Perform TSI and invasive species control work using forestry equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, or closely related field
Connecticut Certified Forester (or ability to obtain within one year)
Strong foundation in silviculture, forest ecology, and forest measurements
Proficiency with compass, diameter tape, clinometer, GPS, and data collection systems
Ability to work full days in the field across rugged terrain and varied weather conditions
Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to operate and maintain power tools (chain saw, brush saw).
Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout Connecticut and the region
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with timber sale layout, marking, scaling, and harvest oversight
GIS experience (ArcGIS, QGIS) and data analysis in Excel or R
Experience with invasive plant management and herbicide application
Urban forestry, municipal forestry, or park management experience
Chainsaw training (Game of Logging or equivalent)
Familiarity with NRCS programs, PA 490, and state forestry programs
Ability to work through conflict, including initiating conversations to achieve desired change. CFI embraces a progressive view on accountability and expects the candidate to be open to self-assessment and providing upward feedback
Compensation & Benefits
Salary based on experience and certification ($55,000 - $65,000)
Mileage reimbursement for all personal vehicle travel for Connwood business at the federal IRS rate. This does not include travel between your home and Connwood’s Rockfall office.
Pension plan eligibility after three years of service. This plan contributes an additional 6% of salary to a Vanguard SEP IRA account of your choosing.
Time allotted for professional development, training, and certification
Eleven paid holidays, ten vacation days, and four personal days each year; 3 (non-accumulating) sick days/year
Workshops to retain licenses and professional development are paid for by Connwood.
SAF membership is paid for by Connwood.
