Connwood Foresters, Inc., was formed in 1945 and grew out of many years of efforts by the CFPA's to find outlets for the poor hardwood trees that cluttered Connecticut's forests.
Michael M. Pochan (right) came to Connecticut to organize the Connwood enterprise. The initial purpose was to provide processing and marketing services for a wide variety of forest products, including lumber, fence posts, pulpwood, and railway ties. Soon Connwood also began providing forest management services. In 1956 the operation moved from a headquarters at a nursery in Cheshire to the site that it now occupies in Rockfall. in 1962 Connwood ended its in house forest products activities which is also when Mr. Pochan left Connwood to begin his career as a state forester. He was succeeded by Sherman H. Perkins (Left) who continued the forestry work until he retired in 1985. These services included marking timber sales, tree planting, forest weed control, management planning, Christmas tree growing, boundary maintenance, forest landscaping, forest land appraisals, and in recent years, urban forestry.
Today, Connwood Foresters is one of the oldest surviving forestry cooperatives in the country and it continues to fill various roles important in the care and management of Connecticut forests, dedicated to meet the changing needs of forest owners across the state.
